My Conversation with Weapons Detection Expert Nikita Ermolaev
Hi, everyone! Recently, over on Facebook I raised some questions regarding the efficacy of weapons detection systems. Admittedly, I did not know much about them, and up until now, any feelings I had regarding them were emotion based. After the tragedy at Apalachee, I was pretty desperate for anything to help my kid (and me) feel better about sending her back into the school building. I joined many other community members in advocating for the school to install weapons detection systems, and I was happy when Barrow implemented the system. However, after a couple of months, I began to hear some negative chatter... alarms failing to go off when they should, kids bypassing the systems, false alarms, and so on. I started to have questions as to just how effective weapons detection systems were. Were these things just an expensive safety blanket?
I needed to learn! So I googled like crazy, and read through lots of articles and one name that kept popping up was Nikita Ermolaev. I reached out to Nikita and asked for his guidance. He graciously agreed to have a discussion with me that I could share with you all!
Nikita Ermolaev is a research engineer at IPVM. IPVM is an independent organization that buys, tests, and rigorously researches security technology. Nikita has spent years digging into weapons detection systems, the AI-powered scanners that many schools, including those here in Barrow, have rolled out. He’s one of the few people out there who actually puts these systems through real world testing instead of just repeating marketing claims.
I needed someone who could walk me through how these systems really work, what they detect well, where they fall short, the problem of false alarms, costs, and whether they truly make our schools safer or just create a false sense of security. That’s exactly what this conversation with Nikita delivered. So thank you, Nikita!
